COMPOSER OF THE MONTH

Georg Philipp Telemann

  • Georg Philipp Telemann was born in Magdeburg, Germany in 1681. He was a composer of the late Baroque period, who wrote both sacred and secular music but was most admired for his church compositions.

  • As a child, Telemann showed considerable musical aptitude, composing his first opera at age 12 and teaching himself roughly a dozen instruments such as the violin, flute, recorder, oboe, viola da gamba, and double bass, among others.

  • Telemann holds a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as being history’s most prolific composer. In addition to composing more than 1000 cantatas and 600 suites, he also created operas, passions, oratorios, and concertos for a variety of instruments. It has been suggested that he may have written more than 3000 pieces. Although many of his original scores were destroyed in World War II, some works once thought to be lost have been found in recent years.

  • While Telemann's career prospered, his personal life was always troubled: his first wife died less than two years after their marriage, and his second wife accumulated a large gambling debt before leaving him.

  • Telemann maintained close relationships with famous contemporaries. Telemann was the godfather to Bach’s son. Handel and Pisendel sent him crates of exotic plants for his gardening hobby.
