COMPOSER OF THE WEEK

DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH

Did you know?

He was a Soviet-era Russian composer and pianist who became internationally known after the premier of his First Symphony in 1926. He wrote it as his graduation piece at the age of 19. He began piano lessons with his mother at age nine and showed significant musical talent. He was able to memorize music incredibly. He was obsessed with cleanliness and also synchronized the clocks in his apartment. He would also regularly send cards to himself to test how well the postal service worked. He loved soccer and thought about becoming a soccer referee. He composed music for 36 films. His music brought great effects on movies. Many of his lost music writings were recovered in 2004. They had been salvaged during his lifetime when a composer friend bribed his housemaid to deliver the contents of his officer garbage to him instead of taking it out to the trash.
