COMPOSER OF THE MONTH
Niccolò Paganini
Niccolò Paganini (born October 27, 1782 in Genoa, republic of Genoa [Italy]—died May 27, 1840 in Nice, France) was a highly acclaimed Italian violinist, composer, and guitarist.
He was renowned for his ability to produce unusual sounds and effects on the violin, including the use of harmonics, double stops, and pizzicato with the left hand.
At the age of five, Paganini started learning the mandolin from his father and moved to the violin by the age of seven. His musical talents were quickly recognized, earning him numerous scholarships for violin lessons.
His fame as a violinist was matched only by his reputation as a gambler. He indulged excessively in gambling. At one point he pawned his violin because of gambling debts.
Between 1801 and 1807 he wrote the 24 Capricci for unaccompanied violin, displaying the novel features of his technique, and the two sets of six sonatas for violin and guitar.
He was a flamboyant showman who used trick effects such as severing one or two violin strings and continuing the piece on the remaining strings.
